Electron transfer reactions are called oxidation reduction reactions or reactions involving transfer of negative accuse (ie. electrons) from i reactant to another. Oxidation as well as reduction are complementary processes. See the figure for improve understanding.
In the higher upwardly reaction, Sodium (Na) metallic is the reducing agent equally it supplies electrons for the reduction of chlorine as well as chlorine is the oxidizing agent equally its accepts electrons cast sodium thereby sodium gets oxidized.
Oxidation vs Reduction
Oxidation (with observe to A) | Reduction (with observe to A) |
Oxidation is the loss of electrons or hydrogen atoms or make of oxygen atoms. | Reduction is the make of electrons or hydrogen atoms or loss of oxygen atoms. |
Removal or loss of electrons A ->A++e- | Addition or make of electrons A +e- -> A- |
Removal of Hydrogen AH+B -> A+BH | Addition of Hydrogen A+BH ->AH+B |
Addition of oxygen A+BO -> AO+B | Removal of oxygen AO+B -> A+BO |
All the higher upwardly reactions releases energy | All the higher upwardly reactions stores energy |
Examples of oxidation reduction reactions are corrosion, respiration, the performance of battery etc.
